Five DHS Seniors Awarded Rotary Scholarships
This year the Rotary Club of Dexter awarded five scholarships to deserving Dexter High School Students. The five winners were selected by our robust Scholarship committee from 36 applications. The committee was Chaired by Stephanie Kalwender. The committee members included: Larry Cobler, Julie Schumaker, Mary Marshall, Lori Sprague, Lennart Johansson, Fred Fahner, Jerry Paulissen The committee reviewed the applications narrowed the list down to 10 finalists, then interviewed each of the finalists.
The Scholarships were announced and awarded at the DHS senior awards program. The DHS senior awards program is by invitation only. Student award winners are invited to the program but not informed for the most part of what awards or scholarships they will receive. Students are called up in alphabetical order and the list of their awards are read as they receive them from the school and the wide spectrum of civic groups presenting awards, including the Rotary Club of Dexter.
This senior class had 267 students. Mary Marshall estimated that 60% of the seniors received one or more awards at the ceremony. As you can see from the pictures the stage and auditorium were packed.
Caryl burke, 2010-11 Rotary Club President, was honored to be on stage to present the Rotary Club Scholarships to each student. The Dexter rotary Scholarship winners for 2011 are: Jaclyn Williams, Eleni Lazarou, Avery Marvel Evan Oxner, Lisa Crompton We were able to capture Caryl and 4 of the 5 scholarship winners after the awards ceremony.
