September 13, 2006 – Rotary Notes
/fontfamily>
Words from the Top:
It’s official! Koy was warmly
welcomed to Michigan with a chilly picnic last
Saturday. About 30 Rotarians, spouses, children,
grandchildren and friends of Rotary braved the
falling temperatures to enjoy an evening of
volleyball, paper airplanes, good food and drink,
and fellowship hosted by Ulf and Ann-Kristin
Hillgren. Photos of the welcome party may be viewed
on our club’s web site:/x-tad-bigger> /x-tad-bigger>/color>

community service department, our community
Christmas tree has been planted in the park with the
little gazebo that lies just below Copeland
Administration Building on Dexter-Ann Arbor Road. If
you are available right after the meeting tomorrow,
please plan to meet there for a “photo op.”
Thanks,

This Week’s Speaker:
Dick Honig: “/fontfamily>My
Life as a Referee”, introduction by Brian Falzon
Announcements:
Include Koy!: Anyone who has spent a little time
with our Thai exchange student, Koy, knows she is a
delightful young woman who is eager to experience
American culture. Be sure to include her in your
fall outings. She loves sports and would enjoy the
opportunity to take in a Tigers game or visit the
Big House for Michigan football. Other ideas: fall
color tour, apple orchard, pumpkin picking, etc.
Many things we take for granted would be very
special for Koy.
One need that arises several times during the year
is for drivers to drop off or pickup our exchange
student from district gatherings, most of which are
1-2 hours away. Please let Lori know if you’d be
willing to do that once or twice. It’s a big help to
the host families and an excellent way to become
acquainted with Koy.
Group Study Exchange: An opportunity for
younger professionals to learn about their field in
another country and culture. This year’s team will
spend four weeks in Thailand. It’s the experience of
a lifetime. Just ask Patty McCarthy, she
participated in a GSE trip to Bangladesh before
joining our club. If you know of a good candidate
age 25-40 hurry up and tell them about this
opportunity. Applications are due next Friday!
Details are available on the district web site:

Youth Exchange: Study abroad opportunities
for high school students age 15-18 ½. Students live
with host families for either a summer or academic
year. Over 40 countries participate in Rotary Youth
Exchange. Some countries have language requirements,
many do not. Talk to the young teens you know about
the opportunity to study abroad. Most do not know
these opportunities exist! It’s up to Rotarians to
spread the word. More information is available on
our club’s web site:
